Melatonin, Sunscreen, + Red Light Therapy
Of course, the sun is a major consideration in skincare. Things to note from the webinar include sunscreen for protection from skin-cancer-causing wavelengths and red light therapy for beneficial wavelengths. In addition, the molecule that regulates your circadian rhythms, melatonin, can help with a host of skin issues both topically and internally.
If you’re unfamiliar with how red light therapy can help your skin, we recommend reading Dr. John’s full article breaking down the science behind its benefits.
When it comes to sunscreen, Dr. John suggests looking for physical mineral sunblock ingredients: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. The cleanest brand is Badger.
Learn all about melatonin and its connection to skin cancer care in Dr. John’s podcasts featuring melatonin researcher Dr. Paula Enderby.
Collagen: Protect What You’ve Got + Boost Production
In the webinar, Dr. John also discusses collagen, and how to protect your collagen levels from decreasing as you age. He suggests using a hydrolyzed collagen supplement if you are looking specifically for peptide supplementation. However, it is best to internally support your collagen through diet and herbs for the best results.
In Ayurveda, there are two herbs that have been studied to support healthy collagen levels: Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica) and Brahmi (Centella asiatica). Fish oils (omega-3 fatty acids) are also crucial to this process.
