The Risks of Low Testosterone
As men age, lower testosterone levels are natural, but they also comes with health risks. According to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, lower testosterone levels can increase unhealthy cellular replication and all-cause mortality risk.
In this study, 149,436 men between the ages of 40 and 69 were evaluated for testosterone levels over the course of four years. During that time, there were a total of 10,053 deaths—1,925 from heart health concerns and 4,927 from cancer.
Researchers compared the men who had the highest levels of testosterone (top 20%) to the men with the lowest testosterone (lowest 20%) in terms of mortality risk. The men with lower levels of testosterone had a 14% percent higher risk of dying from any cause and a 20% higher risk of dying from cancer.
In the same study, men with lower levels of sex hormone binding globulin were at greater risk for all-cause mortality and specifically for heart- and cancer-related health issues.
Symptoms of Low Testosterone
Testosterone levels are known to decline in men as they age, causing libido and performance issues that slow the natural urge to reproduce. With 70% of men over 70 having low testosterone, I recommend that men over 50 start being on the lookout for signs of low testosterone.
According to research published in Aging Male, the European Journal of Endocrinology, CNS & Neurological Disorders – Drug Targets, and other journals, there are many signs and symptoms of low testosterone.
The Signs and Symptoms of Low Testosterone Include:
- Lack of energy
- Less physical strength
- Mood changes
- Decreased enjoyment in life
- Decreased endurance
- Low libido and performance
- Cognitive decline

Ayurvedic Testosterone Support
While many benefits have been documented from synthetic testosterone, most low-testosterone therapies are based on the gas gauge concept, which means that the solution for low levels is just to fill the tank—without fully investigating why the tank went dry.
The body’s endocrine system is extremely complex and all the body’s hormones work in harmony with each other, as well as in sync with all the organs; organs systems; and mental, physical, and emotional needs.
While just filling the tank provides numerous benefits, there are associated risks that include blood clotting, heart health, and prostate and breast tissue problems. Studies show that excess testosterone from over supplementation can convert to estrogen, potentially causing a variety of additional health concerns.
The Ayurvedic approach to supporting healthy levels of testosterone is to supplement with nutritional precursors that the body would need to manufacture its own testosterone. This can be done without disturbing the rest of the endocrine system and allows the body to make only what it needs, as opposed to over-ruling the body’s intelligence and injecting testosterone based on the gas gauge theory.

In LifeSpa’s Testosterone Boost formula, I combine two Ayurvedic herbs: PrimaVie Shilajit and LJ100 Eurycoma logifolia. Studies show the combination of these promote natural improvements in testosterone levels for both men and women and support natural biosynthesis and balance of both testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin.
