Turmeric Boosts Gallbladder Function by 50%

by John Douillard on July 27, 2019 | 6 Comments

lifespa image, gallbladder, turmeric powder on plate with spoon, colorful quilt backgroundTurmeric has been time-tested and well-studied (boasting over 5600 scientific citations!) to be a powerful agent for optimal health. It is perhaps most well-known for its support of the liver, and as the liver has its hand in nearly every function of the body, turmeric has been found to wear many hats.

As a result of almost 60 years of consuming processed foods laced with preservatives and refined, bleached, boiled, and processed vegetable oils, the vital functions of the liver and gallbladder have been compromised.

The liver makes bile, which is like a Pac-Man that gobbles up old toxic cholesterols and other toxins in the liver and intestines. If there is enough fiber in your diet, the fiber will attach to the toxic bile and escort it to the toilet. Without enough fiber, up to 95% of the toxic bile is recirculated back to the liver with all the toxins in tow.3

Unused bile is stored in the gallbladder in a concentrated form: up to 15x concentrated.4 This highly concentrated bile would only be required if one were digesting huge amounts of fat in one sitting, such as the brains or intestines of a woolly mammoth.

In modern times, we rarely eat enough fat to employ the gallbladder to contract and use all of its stored concentrated bile. This lack of use has contributed to thick, viscous bile and the slow decline of the gallbladder’s ability to contract fully and release a potent amount of bile.

With weak contraction and inadequate bile flow, fat-soluble toxins go undigested or unprocessed by the liver and find their way to be stored in fats cells, which can include the brain. Good, nutritious fats can be underutilized, making us vulnerable to low energy, fatigue, mood concerns, as well as the storage of excess fat, which contributes to weight gain and obesity.5

Processed foods, defined by their extended shelf life, are laced with processed vegetables oils that are congestive for the liver and gallbladder. These processed foods are linked to a 141% increased risk of metabolic syndrome.1

  • High triglycerides
  • Low HDLs
  • High blood pressure

Turmeric Boosts Bile Flow

Studies show that turmeric provides excellent support for the liver and bile production.6 This deservingly famous root has also been shown to boost gallbladder contraction by 50%!2

In one study, 40mg of the extract of turmeric, curcumin, increased the contractions of the gallbladder by 50%. There are over 300 additional constituents of turmeric that studies show to support liver and gallbladder health.

      Hi Rachel,

Great for Vata (Winter) and Kapha (Spring) anytime but can be a little heating for Pitta in Summer. Better for Pitta in Winter.

      Hi Marilyn,

Yes it will increase the natural production of bile from the liver and support the health and function of that bile.

      Be Well,
      Dr. John
