Podcast Show Notes
In this episode of the Ayurveda Meets Modern Science podcast, host John Douillard, D.C., C.A.P., interviews Dr. Izabella Wentz on her books Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Adrenal Transformation Protocol. Dr. Wentz is a compassionate, solution-focused integrative pharmacist dedicated to finding the root causes of chronic health conditions. Her passion stems from her own diagnosis with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in 2009 following a decade of debilitating symptoms.
Female Risk Is Higher
Women are more susceptible to thyroid disorders than men. The thyroid gland and its functions are closely linked to a woman’s reproductive health and ability to survive in times of stress.
While thyroid disease can be protective (as seen in women during times of war and famine), it is not something we want to have now. This may show that women in general are more in tune with the environment around us. Modern-day stressors, like working too much or restricting our diets, can also trigger thyroid issues in women, which is why it is crucial to prioritize self-care and well-being.

The number of patients with thyroid issues worldwide continues to rise, potentially influenced by the increasing toxins we are exposed to daily. Exposure to various chemicals through personal care products, cleaning products, the air we breathe, and other sources can contribute to this. Dr. Izabella Wentz tells her own story of how her lip gloss led to high levels of arsenic in her body.
Supporting the liver’s ability to detoxify, cleaning up personal care routines, and adding amino acids to the diet can help reduce toxin accumulation in the thyroid.
While there are many variants that can lead to someone having a thyroid issue, Dr. Wentz believes the top three risk factors are:
- Predisposing factors
- Blood sugar issues
- Infections
