Podcast Show Notes
In this episode of the Ayurveda Meets Modern Science podcast, host John Douillard, DC, CAP, hosts a free webinar on how to Ayurvedically manage your weight and sugar cravings. He taps into the circadian science of seasonal eating and fixing the weak links in your digestive system to help bring your body back into balance. He takes questions from the audience on their weight + cravings concerns.
Resetting Your Ability to Burn Fat
It is normal to experience seasonal swings in weight (gain weight in the fall and winter and lose it in the spring). In the springtime, no starch is being harvested naturally. Historically, it would be hard to get much food from an austere spring harvest, which forces the body to burn fat. Our microbiome (and the soil microbiome) changes in springtime to allow us to burn this higher amount of fat. Spring also offers a perfect time for us to reset our bile flow, setting us up for more effortless weight loss and lymphatic detoxification. Another important component of weight management is stress management. Dr. John discusses the connection between stress and weight balance, and how herbs can help.
In his book Eat Wheat, Dr. John writes about a study he conducted regarding meal times, meal size, and weight loss. Eating a medium breakfast, a large and slow lunch, and a light and early dinner not only aligns with Ayurvedic principles but gave the best results for his participants. He breaks down the science of how a weak digestive system can contribute to getting fewer nutrients from your food alongside promoting unwanted weight gain. Balancing blood sugar, promoting bile flow, chewing food thoroughly, cleansing seasonally, and taking Ayurvedic herbs like Gymnema are just some solutions he covers in this webinar.
