Consciously Clean Ayurvedic Skin Care
In 1997, I started working with natural pharmacist Ben Fuchs to combine the Ayurvedic herbs we used in our Panchakarma Spa with the best of the West’s natural skin care concepts. We came up with a consciously clean line with all-organic Ayurvedic herbs and 100% recognizable ingredients years before it was trendy!
In 1999, LifeSpa was dealing with the aftermath of an office fire. The fire destroyed all of our stock of herbs and skincare. I received a phone call from a woman in Sweden asking to re-order our Ayurvedic Body Butter. She said it was the only product that helped her chronic eczema. She called me every three weeks for months asking and begging that I quickly make new stock of our Body Butter. Thanks to her, our Ayurvedic Body Butter and Skincare Line were the first products to come back online after the fire!
LifeSpa’s Skincare line at-a-glance:
– Organic botanical materials with their full microbial spectrum
– Fat-soluble ingredients to help absorption
– No fillers or additives
– No preservatives
– No water
We added no water, allowing us to not add any preservatives that can be harmful to the skin. Whenever you see water as an ingredient, there must be a preservative added because microbes use water to grow. Water is classically used as a filler to add ounces to the product, replacing quality for quantity. At LifeSpa, we use only concentrated botanical materials that are all fat-soluble. With no water added, no preservatives are needed. Since the phospholipid layer of the skin is also fat-soluble, using 100% fat-soluble botanicals and butters allows for the best absorption through the skin’s phospholipid layer.
Note: Because our entire line is chemical, water, filler and preservative free, only a very small amount of concentrated material is needed. Water should be added during application to help spread the concentrated product.
Squalane
For our moisturizers and repair serums, we infuse olive squalane with our organic Ayurvedic herbs. Squalane (the more stable form of squalene) is found only in fish, some grains, olives, and humans. In humans, squalene acts as one of the body’s natural moisturizing factors. We use squalane to carry the Ayurvedic botanicals across the phospholipid layer of the skin into the deeper layers, treating the skin from the inside out.
Studies show that while squalene is naturally produced by the body, its production drastically slows after age thirty, accelerating skin aging and damage. As a topical agent on the skin, it has been shown to provide natural protection from lipid oxidation and UV radiation. The same study reported that squalane does not have an oily feel; it is odorless, antibacterial, and noncomedogenic (doesn’t block pores).
In our Ayurvedic body butter, we use squalane as a driver to carry the organic herbal support into the deeper layers of the skin. We then add a variety of nut and seed butters, along with evidence-based botanicals known to topically support healthy and functional skin.
LifeSpa’s Ayurvedic Body Butter is designed as a full-body moisturizer that, when used daily, will offer deep moisture and promote a glowing and rejuvenated appearance to the skin. It leaves the skin looking richly nourished and accented with delicate and intoxicating vanilla aromamatic botanicals of tonka bean, balsam peru oil and ylang-ylang. Carefully crafted from a blend of Ayurvedic skin care treasures, including organic Turmeric, Manjistha, Neem, and Shatavari, our Body Butter brings all the magic of Ayurvedic beauty care to life.
Get to Know the New Organic Botanicals
Since 1998, when we first formulated the LifeSpa Skincare Line, many new fantastic botanicals have become available. To enhance the effectiveness of our original Ayurvedic Body Butter, we have since added sea buckthorn oil, sea fennel, holy basil, rosehip, kokum seed butter and aloe leaf juice.
Sea Buckthorn Oil
Sea Buckthorn oil comes from the berries, leaves and seeds of a small shrub (Hippophae rhamnoides) found in the Himalayan region. It has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Externally, it was used for the skin and internally for liver, blood sugar and immunity support.
It is rich in fat soluble vitamins, E and K as well as antioxidants, phytosterols, carotenoids that protect the structure of the skin. It is also rich in the superfood/fat called gamma linolenic acid (GLA) found to support the body’s natural defense against eczema and psoriasis.
Sea Fennel
While Sea Buckthorn does not come from the sea, Sea Fennel (Crithmum maritimum) grows right next to the sea, mostly along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Resembling barley, this plant is rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, carotenoids, omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and essential oils, sea fennel has numerous health benefits.
One study found that topical application of sea fennel regulated 64 proteins that are active in the superficial and deep layers of the skin. The proteins were found to support the body’s natural abilities in cell survival, healthy gene expression, inflammation management, and healthy keratinocyte proliferation.
Tulsi Holy Basil
Tulsi Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine both internally and externally. Internally, it is best known as an adaptogen. The two most active constituents of holy basil are eugenol and usolic acid. Usolic acid It is commonly used in the cosmetic industry for its ability to support healthy, elastic, and youthful skin. In fact, these results are so effective it has been patented for cosmetic use.
Both eugenol and usolic acid have been shown to be effective antioxidants known to protect the skin from UV radiation and undesirable bacteria. In addition to protecting the skin topically from chemicals and radiation, they have been shown to break up unwanted biofilms in the mouth and intestines.
Rosehip Oil
Rosehip (Rosa canina) Oil comes from the fruit/berry of a small shrub found all over the world. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Best known for their antioxidant and antibacterial properties and rich in vitamin C, polyphenols, vitamins E, B and A. The seed’s oils are commonly used in cosmetics to support the body’s natural ability to heal and repair the skin.
Kokum Seed Butter
Kokum Seed Butter (Garcinia indica) is made from the seed of the tamarind plant of south India. Similar to cocoa butter, kokum seed butter has been used topically in traditional Ayurvedic skin care for thousands of years. It is becoming more popular in modern cosmetics. It is nutritive for the skin as well as demulcent and emollient, making it an effective skin moisturizer. It also has some astringent properties known to help cleanse and detoxify the skin as well.
Aloe Leaf Juice
Aloe Leaf Juice (Aloe barbadensis) is a succulent used worldwide to support the health and function of the skin. Known for its wound healing, antimicrobial and skin protective qualities, aloe vera has become synonymous with skin care. It has been shown to protect the skin from UV radiation, inflammation and chemical irritation.
