The Right Detox to Boost Immunity
I receive many questions about whether or not it is best to do a cleanse or detox during times when the immune system needs to stay strong. The answer involves a few factors. First, it is important to say that not all cleanses are created equal.
According to Ayurveda, addressing the reasons we become toxic is the priority. We accumulate toxins when the digestive and detox pathways break down. To detoxify well, you need to digest well and to digest well, you need to detoxify well—fortunately, the same pathways are used for both. So, one way to assess if you need a cleanse, besides feeling tired, stiff, achy, rashy, moody, or brain foggy, is to evaluate your digestive strength. Are there any foods you do not tolerate? If so, just taking those foods out of the diet does not address the reason you are not digesting them—it just takes the stressor out, leaving the cause untouched.
Leaving a digestive problem untouched by only removing hard-to-digest foods can set you up for more severe health concerns down the road. For example, according to the EPA, 70 million tons of toxins were dumped into the atmosphere in 2019.
Most of those toxins are fat-soluble and require a strong digestive system to break them down and detoxify. Ayurvedic cleansing at LifeSpa prioritizes rebooting digestive strength, lymph drainage, and intestinal lining repair first—before the detox, and this is part of all our cleanses. The Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse is a 14-day cleanse aimed at restoring the ability to digest and detox well, so we do not rebound back with the same concerns shortly after the cleanses ends. Perhaps the most important part of the Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse is its focus on the “inner skin” or epithelial lining of the intestines and lungs. These linings are the first responders for any immune event.
The Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse focuses on the delicate balance of the gut and respiratory lining to support a healthy lung and gut microbiome that equips the body with the lion’s share of our immune system. According to Ayurveda, immune strength depends of being a healthy digester and efficient detoxifier. To accomplish that, we start with the delicate care of the body’s two main immune barriers in the respiratory and digestive systems.
All this being said, the Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse is a great cleanse to support your immune strength, While it is best to get rest when cleansing, the Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse is designed to be done while working, with no major changes to your busy lifestyle. We just ask you to not add activities and, whenever possible, take some extra needed rest.

What is the Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse?
The Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse is a two-week, at-home, Ayurvedic digestive detox and lymph cleanse program rooted in medical science and ancient cleansing wisdom of Ayurveda. This kitchari cleanse has been developed by Dr. Douillard through decades of clinical practice with thousands of successful cleansers, many of whom are now its biggest fans.
Where some cleanses emphasize extreme fasting and dangerously unbalanced diets, Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse relies on a gentle, simple kitchari diet that allows the body to burn fat without hunger pains.
Where some cleanses trigger blood sugar crashes, starvation-mode cravings, and binging, Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse balances blood sugar, allowing the body to enjoy the contented blissful energy of natural fat-metabolism, while you continue working and going about your daily life.
The Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse is unique because it repairs the body’s detox and digestive channels before starting detox. Cleansing without this preparation can move toxins from one fat cell to another, which defeats the purpose of cleansing and often manifests as stubborn digestive weakness and symptoms of lymphatic congestion.
During the two-week Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse, you will do yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, and short aerobic exercise; take Ayurvedic herbal formulas; and eat a special diet.*
The Colorado Ayurvedic Cleanse can be done while working and leading your regular lifestyle.
To prep your body to flush toxins, we make sure your detox channels are functional by following an allergen-free, whole food diet, and taking herbal formulas. This phase focuses on:
- Balancing blood sugar + restoring intestinal mucosal barrier.
- Destagnating lymphatic system.
- Decongesting liver, thinning bile + preparing to detox.
You will eat a simplified diet of non-fat kitchari—a nourishing rice and bean dish to help reboot digestion. There are three meal options to choose from. You’ll be drinking ghee each morning, performing the ancient Ayurvedic process of oleation. Self-inquiry exercises bring to the surface and release old emotions, patterns, and behaviors that store in fat cells. Phase 2 closes with a gentle laxative. This phase focuses on:
- Resetting fat metabolism.
- Flushing liver + detoxing fat-soluble toxins.
- Releasing destructive emotions, patterns + behaviors.
Return to Phase 1 diet with a protocol to boost digestive fire.
- Reset upper digestive strength, the most common cause of digestive issues.
A long-term well-being plan.

I was going deep in rabbit hole when I saw this. I know, its a little bit of the topic. Or not?
How about live the body and take walk around, before starting the cleansing?
Non mirror visual self inspection? Or I need to go back and read about tantras? Meditation? Yoga?

How can we do “walk around” inside us, before cleansing? Some “ old ceremonials” in USA are illegal ….He. Present system is making us to much stressful , so we don’t have time to think about it. Or feel. Toxic body doesn’t feel very well. That’s the one of main reasons for so much divorces. And loosing friends.
“Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve.”
― Coco Chanel
Coco didn’t know much about occupational and environmental toxins. People still don’t know how toxins change face expression. Buffy face= liver problems( stagnated liver because of acting of heavy metals, corrosive chemicals, etc). Liver is making precursors for all hormones. Liver is degrading enzymes which regulate blood pressure. Liver spots on the skin are results of overburdened liver from toxins. Released toxins are helped by the skin to expel them fastest way. On surface, metals like to oxidize, and change color. Chemicals, food additives, cosmetics, etc can give you psoriasis and eczema on the skin when released. And so on. You aren’t you with big help of “ 1% system”.
Dear John,
Thanks to your book ‘eat wheat’ I got to do the short home cleanse this spring, which worked really well for me!
Now I would like to do a fruit cleanse ( as where I am right now I could only find normal brown lentils or the whole mung bean with skin, the grean one) and was wondering whether it would still make sense to do the daily ghee oleation first thing in the morning and only having smoothies for the rest of the day?
Thanks for your feedback!
Larissa
Hi Larissa,
yes you could do that. We call it the poly diet in our cleanses.
Be Well,
Dr. John
