Every season can be a perfect time to cleanse toxins from the deep tissues of the body as well as to give the body a deep emotional cleanse. Though spring may be the ideal time to cleanse the body’s fat cells, the toxins and the emotions stored in the fat can be cleansed in any season. I always say the best time to detox is when you feel ready and have the time and can turn down the volume of a busy and hectic life. When we release emotional toxins, it always helps to have some time to be still and look inward with some Ayurvedic Self-Inquiry. While our cleanses here at LifeSpa – the Group Colorado Cleanse each spring and fall, the Anytime Colorado Cleanse, the 4-Day Short Home Cleanse, and the Lighten Up! Emotional Freedom Cleanse – are all designed to be accomplished while working, having a lighter schedule while cleansing can always help.
According to Ayurveda, digestive toxins, or ama, as well as environmental toxins are stored in the body’s fat cells, as they are fat-soluble. In one study, 14 major toxic chemicals – all of which are fat-soluble – were detoxed out of the fat cells during the cleansing process called oleation, where ghee is ingested daily. (1) Chemicals such as dioxins, highly toxic and dangerous pollutants, (2) were released and flushed from the patients’ fat cells – many of which may have been stored there for up many years! (3-8) Remarkably, toxins continued to be flushed for 3 months after the cleanse as shown in the study. (3) Further studies have found that cleansers who regularly practiced oleation with ghee (Ayurvedic detox) yielded a 70% decrease in heavy metals and other toxins, and needed 80% less doctor’s visits than the general population. The bottom line is that when we are under stress (and who isn’t these days?), we store fat and crave sugar, carbs and stimulants. The dangerous part is that most of the environmental pollutants, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals are all fat-soluble. In a stressful world, our body stores these fat-soluble toxins as an emergency response because the liver and bloodstream become overwhelmed with stress-related and environmental toxins. While stored in our fat cells, these toxins slowly break the body down significantly, contributing to degenerative concerns as we age.
What many of us don’t realize is that we also store “molecules of emotion” in our fat cells. According to Dr. Candice Pert’s book, The Molecules of Emotion, (9-12) old protective emotional patterns of behavior can lodge in the body for years, making us think the same thoughts and repeat the same behaviors (dating as far back as our childhood!) again and again as adults.
According to Ayurveda, when under stress, both toxic fat-soluble chemicals and toxic emotions store in our fat cells until we can convince the body that it is safe enough to release those toxins. The most effective way I have seen to accomplish this is to force the body to be a better fat burner. Taking ghee on an empty stomach first thing in the morning while eating a no-fat diet of mostly kitchari (a rice and bean soup dish) for 4-7 days followed by a gentle laxative therapy has been shown to be an effective way to reset fat burning.
