In my quest to find the purest protein powder available, it became very apparent that the processed nature of almost all protein powders today renders them challenging for the body to digest.
In a healthy body, when proteins are broken down, denatured or hydrolyzed into amino acids by the hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, very little free non-toxic L-glutamic acid is released. When proteins are hydrolyzed in a food manufacturing plant, an abundant amount of toxic D-glutamic acid is released.
For some reason, this toxic form of D-glutamic acid is readily absorbed into the blood – unlike the natural L-glutamic acid, which mostly passes through undigested into the feces. When the D-glutamic form acid enters the blood stream, it can easily combine with a sodium molecule and form MSG (mono-sodium glutamic acid).
MSG is a nervous system stimulate that amps ups the taste buds response to a flavor. While it might make bland food taste better, it can over-work the nervous system and is considered a toxin.
While most folks are only reactive to this in high doses, such as when used as a flavor enhancer, most protein powders are ripe with the toxic form of D-glutamic acid.
The only protein powder I have been able to source thus far is a pure, undenatured whey protein powder. The process is incredibly simple. The whey is simply drained off the curd, filtered for impurities, and dried. There is no processing, denaturing or hydrolyzing of the whey protein.
When adhering to this very natural process, the whey protein is undenatured.
Undenatured Whey Protein Powder: LifeSpa Whey Pure
Whey Pure is a natural, nutritionally advanced, bioactive whey protein concentrate containing naturally-occurring immunoglobulins that support the delicate balance of the body’s immune system. The whey is sourced from New Zealand cows, where herds are free from environmental contaminants and are not subjected to hormones and antibiotics that are commonly used elsewhere.
This undenatured whey protein is a rich source of amino acids, including those needed for the synthesis of glutathione – an important antioxidant that can be depleted by stress. This formula is resistant to stomach acid and supports intestinal health. The 80% protein content supports lean body mass.
Why Whey Pure?
Whey protein is one of the two major proteins in cow’s milk. The New Zealand herds used for producing Whey Pure are not given hormones and are not intentionally infected with a pathogen to force them to make antibodies specific to that pathogen.
Boosts Natural Immunity
Whey Pure is a whey protein, rich in immunoglobulins (antibodies) that are preserved using very careful techniques under controlled temperature and pH. During a series of filtration steps, lactose and water are removed from a slurry of whey. Special care is taken to maintain the integrity of the antibodies and to optimize the protein complex. In comparison to fluid cow’s milk and ordinary whey protein concentrate, Whey Pure contains significantly greater concentrations of proteins and immunoglobulins.
Whey Pure can be used not only as a high biological value protein source for healthy individuals, but also to provide immunoglobulins to those in need. The immunoglobulins it contains are almost identical to those of the mammalian species and resist peptic digestion. The immune-balancing effect of immunoglobulins supports the body’s normal defense mechanisms. (1,2)
Benefits the Lymph
Each antibody in Whey Pure (IgG1, IgG2, IgM, and IgA) has a specific role in immune function:
- IgM responds quickly to an antigen, specifically to bacteria and viruses.
- Later in the response, IgG1 and IgG2 attack viruses and toxins.
- IgA is critical in the body’s immune system.
- The immunoglobulins also contribute to the humoral immunity of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT).
Naturally Builds Muscle
Among Whey Pure’s ingredients is a high concentration of the branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which can be used by skeletal muscle during stress and to support nitrogen utilization. The semi-essential amino acid, arginine, increases the activity of natural killer and lymphokine-activated cells, as well as IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1). (1)
Boosts Antioxidant Activity
Cysteine and the non-toxic natural form of glutamate are found in higher concentrations in Whey Pure than in other high-biological-value proteins. These amino acids serve as precursors to glutathione, (3) an endogenous antioxidant especially needed during stress, exercise, and poor nutrition.
Lactoferrin, alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, and bovine serum albumin are other proteins in Whey Pure that contribute to glutathione synthesis and support immune function. (3,4)
Blood Sugar and Body Composition Support
Supplementation with whey protein may support glucose metabolism and muscle protein synthesis in humans. (5)
In a group of women, whey protein improved body composition, but soy protein did not. (6)
Conclusion
In conclusion, I’ve been searching for a high quality undenatured whey protein for years, and I am thrilled to say I finally found one that makes and exceeds the cut.
Suggested Use of Whey Pure: Mix 2 scoops with a cold beverage or add to your favorite recipe once daily or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. To prevent protein denaturation and maintain the protein activity level, do not mix in hot drinks or recipes that require baking or boiling. Also, do not mix with pineapple or papaya because their enzymes may deactivate the protein. Children and pregnant or lactating women should consult their healthcare practitioner prior to use.

When I eat foods containing msg, or in the past when trying a hydrolyzed powdered collagen, I experience an increase in anxiety. Do you think the type of whey you’re suggesting here would not have that msg-like effect for people? It sounds like you’re saying the natural glutamate in this is not “unbound” or dangerous in the way it would be in other protein powders? So you think this type of whey is not going to have that negative effect for people? I’d rather not try it until I know.
Thanks!

Hi
How is this product compared to Immunocal platinum? They swear no one else has the best undenatured whey protein on the market, just them! But theirs cost so much.

Hi Dr. Douillard:
Could you please tell me if your Undenatured Whey Protein Powder contains beneficial fats (i.e. Essential Fatty Acids) as I understand that most (processed) whey protein powders on the market do not contain such beneficial fats. Thank you.
LifeSpa Staff says
Hi Kathleen,
Dr. John’s Whey Protein contains many essential amino acids, but very little fat overall.

What about whey protein isolate. I have a similar clean product from NZ, (Diesel) however have heard that the process to create the isolates damages the protein. The method used by this Co. is called CFM, (cross flow microfiltration) and ultra filtration. Thanks Dr D.

Hello there. First of all, is pure whey different than just whey protein? I had gastric bypass almost15 yrs ago and lost 200 lbs and now I’m battling all sorts of illnesses due to complications after surgery, one of which is nutrient deficiency. My body does not absorb them like everyone else’s now. My protein levels in the past have been very very low and I was drinking 2 Whey protein drinks a day( with 2 scoops not just 1of powder) plus eating my regular 2 meals a day, for three months and my levels actually went down. I was trying to prepare for surgery and it had to be at a certain level. I was devastated to say the least.
So I guess what I’m asking is, is the product that you are talking about different than regular whey protein and if so, where could I get it? Would you also know if it Would be ok for someone who has has gastric bypass surgery to absorb? Thank you for your time….

Hi Angel. Here at LifeSpa we have a product called Whey Pure found here: http://store.lifespa.com/whey_pure.html The whey is sourced from New Zealand cows where herds are free from environmental contaminants and are not subjected to hormones and antibiotics that are commonly used elsewhere. This undenatured protein is a rich source of amino acids, including those needed for the synthesis of glutathione, an important antioxidant that can be depleted by stress.
Deb says
Is this whey from grass-fed cows? I am told this would be nutrionally superior to grain fed and also supports free range animals rather than those confined in a factory farm.
John Douillard says
Hi Deb. The whey is sourced from New Zealand cows where herds are grass fed and are free from environmental contaminants and are not subjected to hormones and antibiotics that are commonly used elsewhere. Be well.

I am wondering why choose Whey when humans aren’t supposed to drink cows milk to begin with…at least that is what I am told. We dont have the ability to digest it well. Sureyly there could be a vegan good protein source that offers similar healthful benefits?
Thank you-
Karen

Hello
Just wondering if you could shed some light on pea protein.
1. What are your thoughts on pea protein and why?
2. If you were to recommend either Pea or Whey what would you choose and why?
Kindest Regards

Why not just make curds and whey and drink the whey itself?

I am also interested as to whether people who can’t have dairy (no allergies just sensitivity) can have whey. I really would love to use this product.
John Douillard says
Hi Denise, people with a dairy sensitivity are typically fine with the whey protein.
Be well,
Dr. John

Does this product contain casein?

Like Susan, I am also interested in how to maintain Agni when drinking smoothies and thus protein mix. Thanks.
Susan says
We don’t drink cold liquids in Ayurveda, or smoothies. I’m wondering why it’s proposed to use this in a cold drink as that puts out the agni. Thanks for your reply.
John Douillard says
Hi Susan, I am primarily advocating that you don’t mix the protein powder in anything too warm because it changes the protein activity level. Room-temperature or luke-warm beverages should be fine.
Be well,
Dr. John

What about people who are sensitive to dairy? Isn’t whey dairy and will cause phlegm?
Barbara Brassell says
Blood type O’s and A’s should avoid dairy as they are naturally sensitive to Cow’s milk products
Sue says
Why do you say this? What is your source of information please regarding A’s and O’s? Thanks
