According to Ayurveda, longevity is supported on the cellular level first and foremost by a healthy lymphatic system, and by rasayana practices which rejuvenate and nourish the nervous system – an area of particular compromise in any stress-filled culture – and other tissues of the body.
While it is essential to properly care for the lymphatic system, which is largely supported by periodically following an intelligent detox program such as the Colorado Cleanse or Short Home Cleanse, Ayurveda also emphasizes the importance of a daily routine or dinacharya consisting of practices that calm and reassure the nervous system, stabilize the blood sugar, support the organs and promote a healthy and stable mental state.
While the traditional Ayurvedic dinacharya or daily routine can have many components, it can be tailored to the western lifestyle by shortening the amount of time for which we do some of them, or paring down the practices to a few essentials. Doing the best we can goes an incredibly long way to rejuvenating the body and feeling great as we age gracefully.
One of the key components of longevity recognized by Ayurveda is proper exercise. Overly strenuous exercise can actually cause the body to crave carbs, causing further imbalance to the blood sugar, weight, and unnecessary strain on heart health. Studies show that long periods of strenuous exercise have questionable benefits, can exhaust and deplete the body beyond what it can properly replenish.
Short periods of exercise that stimulate the fast-twitch muscle groups, emphasize proper breathing and are alternated with resting periods, on the other hand, have been found to have a powerful effect on the body, mind, and mood. I call this less-is-more approach “longevity exercise,”and I encourage everyone to add it as their cardiovascular base, and a foundational element of your longevity plan.
