According to Ayurveda, the heart is the body’s first organ to receive the stress signal. In the example of ancient humans, if you are being chased by a bear or a mountain lion, the heart must be the first organ to receive the stress message so that it can begin adequately pumping blood to the blood vessels in the arms and legs so that we can keep running to safety.
In our modern lives, the equivalent of “being chased by a bear” may be rushing to get the kids to soccer practice, meeting a deadline at work, or panicking over how dinner is going to get on the table by 5 o’clock.
No matter what the stressor is, the heart is the first organ to process the stress signal, which gives it two responsibilities. First, it must process and act on the stress signal and deliver adequate blood supply to the right places. Next, it must get rid of the toxic by-products from the signaled stress. These waste products are drained into the heart’s lymphatic vessels.
If the lymphatic vessels are congested, and the stressors keep coming, soon there will not be enough available stress receptors in the heart to deal with the stress.
This is one of the premier ways in which we put undue stress on the heart, compromising our heart health.
