What Are Probiotics?
Probiotics are microorganisms such as bacteria and yeasts that thrive in the body and particularly in the intestinal tract, doing the heavy lifting for many of the functions in the body. While a healthy gut is naturally rich in a diverse array of microorganisms that perform a multitude of different bodily functions, many aspects of modern life such as stress, nutrient-stripped processed foods, antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, and potentially the GMOs in our food serve to take out the richness and diversity of our microbiome.
The idea of re-populating the gut with probiotics in supplement form can be attributed to Eli Metchnikoff, who in 1907 aimed to replace the harmful bacteria in the gut with friendly bacteria.
The word probiotic, a Latin (pro) and Greek (biotics) hybrid, means “for life.” Indeed, recent research reminds us that 90% of our cells belong to the microbes that make up our bodies, while only 10% can be called human cells. Feeding these microbes the appropriate foods for them to thrive and successfully accomplish their roles can certainly be seen as a “for life” job.
Recent research has also brought to light that, while many probiotics make their passage through the gut and possibly create some visible benefit along the way (these are called transitory bugs), a small percentage of the probiotics on the market are actually colonizing – meaning they take residence along the gut wall and help the good gut bugs proliferate.
Having a sufficient amount of beneficial bugs in the gut can help balance the unfriendly microbes, as well as affect the mood, brain, thinking, and emotional state of the person in a positive way.

Oral + Respiratory Defense for fresh breath and immunity: chewable, strawberry-flavored probiotic formulas that activate in the oral cavity for support of ear, nose, and throat health and to naturally promote fresh breath. As you chew, each tablet releases the DSM 13084 strain of Streptococcus salivarius, a beneficial bacterium that normally occurs in a healthy oral cavity. S salivarius adheres to cells in the cavity and positively affects the bacterial population and natural immune defenses therein. Once established, S salivarius DSM 13084 also naturally counteracts the production of volatile sulfur compounds that can cause bad breath.
Slippery Elm Prebiotic Formula Decoction or Tea: According to Ayurveda, the health of the intestinal wall was tended to with great care in innumerable ways. Today, there are many scientific studies confirming how these Ayurvedic therapies actually support a healthy microbiome as well as optimal digestive and overall health. My favorite such therapy that I have been using successfully in my practice for almost thirty years is a concentrated tea made out of chopped (not ground) slippery elm bark, marshmallow root and licorice root.
