In recent years, the research on fish oil supplements has become so prevalent and impressive that it is hard to ignore the benefits of daily fish oil supplementation. The key is to make sure you are getting good quality, highly concentrated DHA/EPA fish oils. Before buying a fish oil supplement, check the milligram content of each capsule. If the capsule holds 1000mg, then make sure the capsule has 1000mg of the active fish oils, such as DHA and EPA. Often the EPA/DHA content is only half or less than the full content of the capsule – if this is the case, don’t buy it.
The EPA/DHA content should be the total amount of the capsule.
Hundreds of studies now suggest that high-quality fish oils support optimal brain, heart, skin, cholesterol, joint tissue health, and nervous system function.
There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids found: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). DHA, EPA, and ALA are called “Essential Fatty Acids” because the human body does not produce them on its own. DHA and EPA are the types that are present in fish oil. ALA can be obtained from a variety of plant foods and must be converted to DHA and EPA by the body.
Food sources of omega-3 fatty acids include flaxseeds, soybeans, and walnuts among others. Fatty cold water fish like herring, salmon, and tuna are the best sources of omega-3’s, but can also contain dangerous levels of mercury. High quality, purified fish oil supplements can be used instead of whole food sources. The oil is usually stabilized with vitamin E, is molecularly distilled, and is tested to be free of PCBs, heavy metals, and pesticides.
