Turmeric is a common ingredient in Indian cooking and is also used in religious ceremonies and skin care. It has become popular as a supplement, both as a whole herb and in its extracted form as curcumin.
It is the subterranean stem of the 2-3 foot, long-leafed Turmeric plant that is used to make the bright yellow ground powder, turmeric’s most popular kitchen incarnation.
Curcumin, turmeric’s primary component, supports a healthy response to circulation and congestion in the body, and inhibits free radical cells. It can reduce stiffness and strengthen joints in cases of joint achiness.
Turmeric has a cleansing effect on the intestines and a stimulant effect on the liver.
In Ayurveda, it is considered to be a blood purifier, and is used to enhance the condition and appearance of the skin both through topical and internal applications.
Caution is recommended with this herb if one is taking anti-platelet or anti-coagulant medication, as turmeric can thin the blood and enhance blood flow.
As curcumin is not easily absorbed by the body, it is traditionally mixed with black pepper to enhance bioavailability. In food, it is best to include both Turmeric and black pepper in spice mixes to achieve maximum health benefits.
