Neem (Azadirachta Indica)

In India, Neem was commonly called “the villlage pharmacy” because it has so many health benefits. According to Ayurvedic myth, the healing properties of this plant were engendered when it was graced with a drop of nectar (amrta) from the cup of immortality. Because of its bitter property, Neem is indicated as having a calming and cooling effect on heat or redness as it shows up on the skin, as well as in the lining of the digestive tract.

For its skin-smoothing, purifying, and beautifying benefits, Neem has been dubbed “Queen of the Skin” in Ayurveda. Its role as topical and internal support for skincare is one of Neem’s greatest glories.

In the digestive tract, Neem functions to balance the beneficial bacteria – supporting the body’s defense against unfavorable microbes. In addition, its high chlorophyll content makes it useful to neutralize odors in the case of foul-smelling sweat or halitosis. For this property, Neem is often used is Ayurvedic toothpastes, and the young twigs themselves have been known to be used in place of toothbrushes.

Neem is also said to cleanse the blood, benefit the eyes, and balance acidity.
