Great Podcast, thank you both so much. I loved your appreciation of what women have to go through in modern times. My one wish at the end was, that I hope I can live long enough to experience how it feels, to have lived in sync with the circadian rhythm. I will do my utmost best to do that, starting right now!
Many thanks. With gratitude and love,
Bena

Two questions:
1.) I read part of the book The Power of When. My take on what I did read as well as a podcast from that book was that some of us operate better at certain times of the day than others. What is best for me as far as when to eat, sleep, workout, etc could be different from others. Thoughts?
2.) How does shift work fit in all this? I know people who work overnights or 2nd shift. How can they best work with their circadian rhythms?
Thank you. Enjoyed the webcast.
LifeSpa Staff says
Hi Wendy,
Thanks for your questions.
1) We do adapt to our geographical location and to work times but not without stress. Melatonin levels are altered and thus we do have to adapt to circadian stress. WE have trillions of years as cells that are in sync w the light dark cycles, when we ignore them the body has to compensate and in the long term there is wear and tear.
2) The best way to take adaptogens like ashwagandha, bacopa, and very small dosages of Melatonin to help reset the circadian clocks. Please read the articles in the Circadian Medicine section of our site: https://lifespa.com/?s=Circadian+medicine

Looking forward on this theme. I am an active woman in my late 30s … I have difficulties in weaking up and beeing funcional early in the morning, even if I sleep 10 hours, it is hard to leave bed and start the day. I have also noticed that I tend to procastinate a lot in the morning… I start feeling awake at 1 pm when half of the day is gone. I have tried exercise and yoga plus medication but still no result
LifeSpa Staff says
Hi Alejandra,
Thank you for your comment. Based on what you have said, it seems like there are a few things to help set yourself up for success. Having morning light help wake you up can be very helpful. Having water in the morning, doing sun salutations, and getting some fresh air can all help as well. Resetting your circadian rhythm with Vitamin D3 in the morning and Liquid Melatonin in the evening is a boon to settling into a schedule.

The joy of solitude in the middle of the night/morning is unparalleled. The world is asleep, quiet; the air is different; sounds lessened. I love waking up in the middle of the night, or very early morning and taking a few hours to meditate/pray. Time alone in spiritual reflection builds strength. My spirit thrives on solitude!
When my family is up, there are more things happening around me!

That was awesome. Made sense.

Hello I am in my late forties and for almost 2 decades I find it difficult to wake up early. There was a time when I could decide to wake up at 3 am to study for a college exam and could do it successfully without an alarm clock. Now the alarm clock buzzes, I turn it off and go back to sleep. I wake up tired.
Please help !!
LifeSpa Staff says
Hi Mina,
Thanks for your comment and request. While we firstly suggest having a consultation to go in-depth into the causes of your sleep and waking energy issues, we can suggest limiting artificial light before bed and working toward deeper, restful sleep as a first step.

This subject interests me because no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to get in sink and stay in sink with this Wonderful circadian rhythm. I lower the lights in the evening, and use the red, low lighting on my computer screen most all the time around the clock. I allow NO wireless in my house, do NOT have a cell phone. I get daylight on my eyes. Even when I go to bed early, I wake up way too early….and then am tired later. Forcing a schedule does not seem to help or work for me. It tends to backfire on me. I have learned the best way to feel the best for me is to RELAX and just let my body flow as it desires, since I am 68 years old and do not have to keep an early rise schedule. I would love it if you speak to this issue, either in this web event or via e-mail. I do work diligently to walk in the best health practices I can. I honor my body as temple, and care for it well. Thanks so much. Pamela

Thank you so very much for this interview. Wow, it gave me a lot to think about. I did not use to be this goofed up; but when I was 52 I was loaded up with mercury poisoning to the point of sitting/laying in a recliner chair for 21 days and nights, unable to barely move to go to the bathroom or get a little simple food to eat. If I exercised at all–even a gentle walk, before this really bad spell hit, I would be down for a week. It was hard for me to understand WHY exercise, that was suppose to be good for me, nearly buried me. My body was easily stressed by everything. After much prayer over this and meditation with God through JESUS, I began to get answers and find the root cause of mercury poisoning in my teeth. I had near 40 different mercury fillings, vaporizing into my body cells, and some of them had been replaced over 40 years of my life time. Now that I think about it, it is AMAZING that I am still alive. I think this is the root of what got me messed up to start with. I have a mini- trampoline and use it faithfully, as I feel up to rebounding, sometimes gentle and sometimes active; but usually NEVER do I feel like exercising in the morning first thing. It is usually early or late afternoon before I feel like exercising.. Some days are good and others I just simply don’t feel like doing much, and I just let my body rest while I keep my mind busy with learning and doing what I enjoy. I am also on my feet a lot in a day, working in the kitchen or out gardening. It would be hard for me to be a couch potato. I am a very meditative person too, by nature it seems. I eat well, and maybe too much at times and not enough at other times. I am not heavy. I am thin. Though when the mercury poisoning hit me hardest I gained a good amount….at least 30 pounds too much; but then by some method, the mercury must have been leaving my body well, as the weight just began to drop off of me again.
Since I first got sick with this mercury toxicity, I have always done better by eating my bigger meal in the evening, so I could sleep. Otherwise, I would wake up starving to death after only a few hours of sleep, and I would have to get up and eat, or I could NOT go back to sleep; and I would be a wreck on that low sleep. I fast and cleanse in the mornings and will not eat until at least noon….sometimes pushing that to 3:00 or 4:00 or even later. I get things done that way, because once I eat significantly, I am down and done doing much physical activity. My body wants to Relax after eating a big meal. I am not so mercury poisoned now, since I got this mercury out of my teeth, and have spent around 13 years cleansing the mercury out of my body cells. BUT then my marriage went extremely bad and was very emotionally stressful and traumatic to my nervous system, and then that nearly buried me. I finally got relief, when our house went into foreclosure, and my Ex-husband for 2 years finally moved out. God gave me Grace and I have been living here for 6 months since, and have not been made to move just yet. I have been working on my health a lot during this time, and the PEACE is SO REFRESHING. I can’t even begin to express how valuable that has been to me !! I felt this was my chance to help heal my body and emotions, and Restoration was my priority; and not trying to figure out what I was going to do next. BUT I have continued to wrestle with my body clock being what I call “goofed-up”. It has perplexed me. I have tried to correct this by the lighting issues and by going to bed early, but that is evidently not enough. I need the exercise in the morning and not later in the day, and I need my bigger meal around noon or so, and not later. I could still skip breakfast with no sweat, but I definitely need to eat some food in the evening, and enough to keep me through the night, so I can sleep through the night. I found the essential oil Vetiver around 5 years ago, to be a life saver for me. It helped me to sleep longer than anything else; and more deeply. If I overdid using it, at applying it at night, I would be in what I called a “Vetiver coma” the next day, BUT it felt very healing to my nervous system all the same. I have been struggling to balance my life for years, so this podcast gave me some new ideas to try. I am so thankful that it was taped and I could view it when I was ready and able to; as I would have missed out, since suddenly at the particular time it was playing live, I was unable to sit down to watch it. I also deal with a personality that may make life a “hard to balance act”, unless I balance it over the week and not the day. I get caught up in something I love doing and I don’t want to quit. It is like there is an anointing on what I am doing and I don’t want to break what is going on in my heart and mind, and lose that momentum. I can’t pick that up easily the next day. I am going to have to re-think a lot of things. I truly sound like the person who does all the right things at the wrong times. This is pathetically sad. I didn’t use to be this way when I was in my youth, and even up into my early 30s. I couldn’t understand how people could go to bed so late and then also sleep so late in the morning. I don’t really sleep so late, but if I really get a good night of sleep at times, I might sleep until 9 AM. Every once in a while that feels so Wonderful. Other times I wake up at 5:00 AM, so there are no two days just alike for me. I just dance the dance of life as I go through it, and based on how I am feeling that day.
I also practice JOY, and THANKFULNESS, and being Grateful to God for His Goodness to me through JESUS. Wow, you have me thinking tonight, and yes I should be heading to bed earlier than this; but today has been very challenging. I got a notice on my door that it time for me to move now, and I am not sure where I am going on a very limited income, with a whole lot of stuff. I look like a health center plus, and I am Wondering what God is about to do with my life, to hopefully turn it into an ordered, healthy life style that is NOT boring or too stressful either, but exciting with a new healthy dance to live. Thank you again for making me reflect on all of this. I also think I need to stay with these new ideas of eating bigger at noon and doing my best to do exercise in the morning before my meal. I do generally do my exercise before any real food, because exercising after a meal seems totally impossible to me. I certainly do NOT want to do it then. Even if it doesn’t work out perfect, I can start by doing my best at this, and hopefully it will get better over time. I certainly can’t stress myself with all of this either. I just have to try to do it peacefully, and stick with it long enough to get results. Thanks again; and thanks for listening to all my chatter. 🙂 Blessings, Pamela
