According to Ayurveda, the immune system depends on awareness. If blood, lymph or venous circulation along with nervous system innervation is blocked in any way, the body’s communication tools can be compromised.
Without awareness or communication, the immune system will not be able to recognize problems as problems. Overtime, problems escalate and the immune system is forced to respond in an overzealous fashion – which is labeled an autoimmune condition.
The Ayurvedic approach to managing autoimmunity is to restore a healthy level of inner awareness.
Join me as we dive into the very complex world of autoimmunity made simple by Ayurveda.

Dr. Douillard,
I have been without sense of smell for about three years. Can you help me to regain it, as well as improve my taste. It has really concerned me that I cannot smell anything, as I consider it unsafe.
Please help!
Thanks.
LifeSpa Staff says
Thanks for your question Emmenette.
We are sorry to hear that you have not been able to use your sense of smell. It is possible that it stems from a deeper imbalance specific to you. If you would like to explore this possibility with an Ayurvedic practitioner, please consider a consult with Tauna or John here at LifeSpa.

I found you just recently and am SO glad I did! I love how you connect all the dots, it all makes so much sense. I’ve been struggling with Hashimoto’s for 7 years. I can’t seem to regulate my thyroid or the antibodies, no matter what we do. I stayed away from gluten, dairy, soy, and corn right from my diagnosis. I eat a super clean diet, I’m very strict about it. However, I still managed to develop numerous food sensitivities, to the point that I only have a handful of foods I can eat. This past May I tested positive for SIBO (methane dominant…meaning constipation). I went through the whole protocol of prescription meds, herbal tinctures, natural supplements to try to get rid of it and am now in the very slow re-introduction phase. I know I developed this because I have very slow motility. I have always had issues with constipation, even as a child. I also know that stress plays a huge role in this. As far as diet, my food preferences tend to be more vegetarian/vegan, but because of so many intolerances and the SIBO, I have been forced to eat basically a Keto style of eating (higher fat, moderate/low animal protein, and my veg are very limited and not fibrous). Since doing that, I have noticed that I get swelling in my legs after eating. My naturopath believes it’s venous insufficiency, which it may be, but I’ve had this gut feeling for quite sometime that my lymph system is having troubles. Upon watching some of your videos, I’m now convinced. Everything you explain absolutely resonates with me. My question to you is this…it is obvious to me now that I need to do your Colorado Cleanse and then your Liver Cleanse; however, from what I have gathered from information in your videos, a lot of what I would need to eat is also what I’m supposed to avoid because of my SIBO. Things such as beans and legumes, a lot of the vegetables that are fibrous (cruciferous and sulfur veg are especially troublesome for me), a lot of the fruits, many grains, and dairy (I can’t do regardless), avoiding high FODMAP foods. What are your thoughts on SIBO and doing the cleanses? Have you had to guide anyone through this and, if so, could you give me some guidance? I watched your video on Candida and SIBO which was great. I would love it though if you would do a video on how to do your cleanse when you have SIBO and food sensitivities. Thank you SO much for your generosity with your time and your knowledge. You are most certainly guiding many, many people in the right direction toward great health.

Thanks for your comment Gena.
While for specific recommendations we always suggest scheduling a consult with Tauna or John, there are some suggestions he had for your situation:
You can do the Colorado Cleanse with the Keto Diet. During Phase 2 (the Ghee oleation phase) you will just want to adjust your diet to be low in fat with lean meat, bone broth, and veggie soups if you can manage. In this case, you can pass on the kitchari and beans if you have adjusted your diet in this way. You should still have the majority of the cleanse benefits with those simple adjustments. If you would like to speak with a practitioner more about SIBO and the Colorado Cleanse, see the link for scheduling a consultation: https://lifespa.com/about-lifespa/ayurvedic-clinic/
Thanks again for your enthusiasm about the Colorado Cleanse!
Be well.

Thank you Dr. Douillard for making a very informative podcast on how important it is to have
Good lymph flow. I would like if you did a pod cast in apoE4 an An how a plant based diet can help
With these mutations.
john d maccari says
Thank You Dr. Douillard for all of the free info which is invaluable. This is a little off topic but do you have any thoughts on parasites?
Carmiella says
Thank You, Dr Douillard
You explain so well and succinctly
Eu says
I love your teachings, but I would like for you to explain how to approach a diet when living in the tropics during 6 months. I’d love to learn how to maintain the lymph system in a weather of 87 to 92 everyday.
Penelope says
Does the white pith of lemons and limes have the same substance you mention that orange pith has for moving lymph?
Angela says
Additionally, how to viruses like EBV impact autoimmune? Does “cleaning” your lymph system and liver clear the viruses?
Dian says
I have the same questions – MTHFR (compound hetero) and EBV…
Angela says
Hi Dian,
Hopefully we can find some answers. I heard Dr. D answer a question on his podcast on liver cleanse and he says that having the MTHFR mutations (of defects) does not mean you cannot heal. I believe he says he has worked with patients that have MTHFR mutations with success.
I wonder if the lymph and liver cleanse will help clear EBV. If you listen to the liver cleanse podcast, go all the way to the end to the questions he is answering from listeners and the one about MTHFR will be close to the end of the questions.
Liz says
In your opinion, is Lichen Sclerosis an autoimmune situation and does lymphatic massage help with this?
Angela says
How does having an MTHFR mutation factor into autoimmune.
Sri says
Can autoimmune conditions such as connective tissue disorder be cured using Ayurveda principles and herbs?
LifeSpa Staff says
Hi Sri,
Ayurveda can be very supportive for connective tissues and immunity.
Jeanne Vollmer says
Can these be viewed after the fact. I have a conflict but really want to hear it. I have skin lupus possibly going systemic.
Edana Hall says
Would you call Primary Lateral Sclerosis an auto immune disorder? Just diagnosed
Would really like your thoughts
LifeSpa Staff says
Thanks for your question Jeanne. We think that you could benefit from an Ayurvedic consultation, which could be very supportive for you. Here is a link if you are interested: Consultation
