Have you ever had a gut feeling or a premonition that something good or bad was going to happen?
This phenomenon is now understood to be a subtle transmission that is carried out by the millions of tiny proteins lodged in the body’s awareness membranes—the skin and senses all over your body. (1)
These energetic messages can be transmitted and received like radio waves, even from long distances!
A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine demonstrated that one’s personal gut activity (perhaps the sixth sense) would significantly increase in response to an emotional event of someone far away that they had recent contact with. (2)
Receiving these signals requires a sophisticated state of awareness that life forms have been developing for billions of years. In humans, it is the five senses.
In this article and video, I will introduce the origins and subtle unsung power of our senses. If we can finally come to our senses and then direct them inward, instead of only outward, we can reap volumes of health benefits.

750 million years after the earth was born, some 3.8 billion years ago, the first signs of life emerged. Key to life’s survival was a need to become aware of the changing earth’s environment. (3)
To accomplish this, life forms developed a cell membrane or an awareness membrane. This cell/awareness membrane would selectively determine what entered or left the cell while interpreting the impressions from the environment.
Today, our human skin and senses function much the same way. The skin is our awareness membrane that provides a protective and adaptive barrier to the outside world, while sending biofeedback signals to the brain and nervous system.
Interestingly, the structure of the primitive cell membranes is almost identical to the structure of our human skin today. (3) Both are made up of a fatty layer, called the phospholipid bi-layer, which is infiltrated with proteins that receive and send signals.
The primitive cell membrane evolved over millions of years to become the skin of more advanced life forms, which eventually developed into what would become human skin. In addition, the senses, human nervous system, and brain are both derived embryonically from—you guessed it—the skin, which is the evolutionary analogue to the cell membrane. (4,5)
Transporting and Storing Emotions
Psychosomatic work, or body psychology, is a branch of psychotherapy focusing on releasing emotions from the physical body. The idea that we hold emotions in the body has been around for thousands of years. According to the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, mental ama (toxicity) stores in the body’s fat, in the fatty layers of the skin.
National Institutes of Health (NIH) science tells us these small proteins or peptides, referred to as “molecules of emotion” by the late Dr. Candace Pert, park themselves in the phospholipid bilayer of the skin and senses. These peptides transport both conscious and unconscious messages to every cell of the body. By becoming more self-aware and using the skin and senses as an awareness membrane, you can begin to unlock years of emotional pain and baggage.
Based on Dr. Pert’s research, while these molecules of emotion are found all over the body, they are concentrated in just a few places that she called “nodal points,” or hot spots. (6-10)
These nodal points, where protective emotions can be accessed, are found where we feel the most—in the skin, five senses, digestive and respiratory tracts, brain and central nervous system. Interestingly, all of these nodal points are either made of skin or directly related to the skin—thus the importance of body awareness.
Interestingly, each of the five senses, as well as the digestive and respiratory tracts, are lined with skin and microbes that are the antennas of the subtle signals of nature and emotions. The brain and central nervous system, which are derived from the same tissue as the skin, complete the awareness package. (4,5,7-10)
What I found fascinating was that Ayurveda has been employing therapies using these sensory nodal points for thousands of years, as though the ancients knew where the key to unlocking the unconscious was hidden.
Music, color, aroma, taste, and touch therapies make up the fabric of Ayurveda.
Yoga postures demand spinal flexibility to release the central nervous system. Ayurvedic breathing exercises to fully access the respiratory tract are taught to all the Hindu children in India and are a prerequisite for spiritual practice.
The treatment of the digestive tract and gut is said to address 85% of all disease, and the holy grail of Ayurveda is the treatment of the brain through techniques like meditation.
By enhancing awareness in these sensory and emotional nodal points (7-10) using these ancient therapies for the senses that are backed by volumes of unsung science, the body will become less stressed and, thus, less emotionally dense, resulting in more loving awareness, superb health, and enhanced longevity.
