The ANYTIME Colorado Cleanse

colorado cleanse 4.0 book coverThe Colorado Cleanse is a 2-week, at-home Ayurvedic digestive detox and lymph cleanse program.

With the Anytime Colorado Cleanse, you can cleanse on your own schedule using the Colorado Cleanse book as guidance.

What does the Colorado Cleanse involve?

During the 2-week Colorado Cleanse, you will do a daily practice of yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises, 12 minutes of aerobic exercise, take Ayurvedic herbal formulas that support the detox process, and eat a special diet. There are 3 phases of the cleanse:

To prep your body to flush deep-set toxins from their storage sites, we first make sure that your detox channels are functional by following an allergen-free, whole foods diet, eating 3 specific foods each day, and taking the specified herbal formulas. This phase focuses on:

  • Balancing the blood sugar and restoring the intestinal mucosal barrier.
  • De-stagnating the lymphatic system.
  • De-congesting the liver, thinning the bile and preparing to detox.

During this phase, you’ll eat a simplified diet of non-fat kitchari — a nourishing rice and bean dish prepared in a way to help re-boot your digestion. There are 3 meal options to choose from. You’ll also be drinking increasing amounts of ghee each morning, performing the ancient Ayurvedic process of oleation. Special self-inquiry exercises are employed in this phase to help bring to the surface and release old emotions, patterns, and behaviors that store in the fat cells. Phase 2 is closed with a gentle laxative therapy on the evening of day 11. This phase focuses on:

  • Resetting fat metabolism.
  • Flushing the liver and detoxing fat-soluble chemicals, pesticides, and preservatives.
  • Recognizing and releasing destructive emotions, patterns, and behaviors.

After Phase 2, you will return to the Phase 1 diet and add in a protocol that will reset your digestion and boost your digestive fire.

  • Reset Digestive Strength: After the cleanse, reset your upper digestive strength, the lack of which is the most common cause of digestive issues.

A long-term well-being plan is provided during this post-cleanse phase.

Colorado Cleanse FAQs

Q: Can I do the Colorado Cleanse if I am pregnant?

A: No, please wait until you are at least 6 weeks postpartum and finished nursing before you begin the Colorado Cleanse. According to Ayurveda, pregnancy is considered a deeply healing time for a woman, a time when the body is able to balance itself in an extraordinary way. We encourage that you allow for this time to do its healing work. In the appropriate time postpartum, taking a gentle approach to the Colorado Cleanse is a wonderful way to rebuild the body and transition into the next phase.

Q: I have had my gallbladder removed. Can I still do the Colorado Cleanse?

A: Yes, but there are some modifications. Instead of the ghee protocol, those with their gallbladders removed are advised to substitute coconut oil, and to stay at 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil per day without increasing the dosage as one normally would during the cleanse. While coconut oil provides many of the fat-metabolism-encouraging and detoxing benefits of ghee, it does not have the same flushing effect on the gallbladder, making it the ideal Oleation tool for this purpose.

Q: Can I do the Cleanse while I am working?

A: Yes, the Colorado Cleanse is designed to be able to do while working or taking it easy, either way. The three Meal Options that are available during the cleanse are provided so that you can tailor your cleanse on a spectrum – with a more nourishing option for a demanding or full schedule, a more austere/cleansing option for those who have more down time, and one in between. In addition, the daily stress-relief practices recommended during the Cleanse are optional, so you can incorporate as many or as few of them as best fits for you.

Q: Can I do the Colorado Cleanse while travelling?

A: The main things you will need access to during the Colorado Cleanse are hot water, clean plain room temperature water, a kitchen and/or reliable source of fat-free foods within the cleansing guidelines (see your book for details), and a bathroom close at hand (particularly on the evening of day 11, when you will be taking a gentle laxative therapy). If all of these are in place for you, and if you will be in one location for at least the majority of the Cleanse, travelling does not have to interfere with an enjoyable and successful detox. We do recommend adding Elim I to your protocol, to ease any possible travel-related constipation as regular elimination is important during the Cleanse.

Q: Can I do the Cleanse and still cook for my family?

A: Yes. Most people find that within a few days, their cravings for the usual comfort foods have so much diminished that they are comfortable cooking non-cleansing foods for their families while adhering to the foods within their chosen Meal Option. However, as each person is different, this may be a time to ask for support in the kitchen from other people in your household or community.

Q: I am not computer savvy. Would I still benefit from the Group Colorado Cleanse and the support package that comes with it?

A: All of your Group Colorado Cleanse support will be available on one online cleanser hub. Accessing this requires logging in with a username and password that will appear in each email you get from us. From there, you’ll be able to access the daily emails (which will also come straight to your inbox), the community forum, listen to pre-recorded video lectures, join the live Q&A calls and type in your questions for these calls. You’ll also have some days before the start of the cleanse to familiarize yourself with this online cleanser hub, so that by the time the cleanse starts you are a pro. No matter how computer un-savvy you take yourself to be, we believe in your ability to navigate this simple website and benefit from the online guidance as much as anyone else.

Q: I have candida. Can I do the Colorado Cleanse?

A: If you have your candida mostly under control, you can do the cleanse with a modified diet. The golden rule during Phase 2 is just NO fat, which leaves lots of candida-safe foods. A Meal Option could consist of Candida-diet-approved grains like buckwheat, quinoa, millet and amaranth with plenty of greens and lean chicken and/or beef.

Q: I am vegan/lactose intolerant. Can I still do the cleanse?

A: The Colorado Cleanse has the option of being entirely vegan. Morning ghee can be replaced with flax seed or olive oil, and supplemental protein can be achieved with high-quality vegan protein powder.

Q: I am a raw foodist. Can I still do the cleanse?

A: The Colorado Cleansing foods are not within the parameters of the raw food diet. While raw foods can be very cleansing and energizing, one of the main objectives of the Colorado Cleanse is to heal the gut wall. For a compromised gut wall, the high fiber content in raw foods may be irritating. Ayurveda also adheres strongly to the principle of seasonal eating, and warm cooked foods take a central role for nourishing a healthy digestive system in the cold months. While during the warmer months, Phases 1 and 3 of the Colorado Cleanse may be conducted with raw foods only, phase 2 (the “Main Cleanse”) relies on a basis of a warm and cooked grains and beans, with the possibility of adding warm, cooked vegetables and extra protein.

Q: I can’t eat sugar and am nervous about all the beets and apples in phases 1 and 3 of the cleanse. Can I still do the cleanse?

A: Yes! Both the beets and apples can be replaced in the Cleanse. Instead of the beets, you can have an extra glass of Green Tonic (recipe in the Colorado Cleanse book, version 3.0) and Malic Acid is a wonderful replacement for apples (malic acid protocol is also outlined in the book).

Q: Can I cleanse during my period?

A: Yes, there is normally no negative interaction between the menstrual cycle and the Colorado Cleanse protocols. In fact, as the menses are a naturally cleansing time for women, pairing this with a cleanse can actually be very synergistic. It can also happen that the menses come out of sync with their usual cycles, encouraged by the cleanse. This is a normal sign of the body responding to the detox and typically normalizes quickly.

Q: Can I drink caffeine and/or alcohol during the cleanse?

A: Because we are trying to protect and rejuvenate your liver and stabilize your blood sugar during this cleanse, it is strongly advised that you do not drink caffeine or alcohol. Doing so can defeat the purpose of the cleanse and, in the case of alcohol, even be dangerous if you aren’t eating enough to absorb and buffer its affects. The Colorado Cleanse provides an excellent opportunity to wean off of our habitual patterns, including caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. The blood sugar balancing aspect of the cleanse can help to neutralize or at the very least soften cravings.

Q: Can I continue taking my usual supplements during the cleanse?

A: To the extent that it’s possible for you, we ask that you go off of any other supplements or herbs aside from the seven herbs that are a part of the Colorado Cleanse protocol. However, by all means stay on any supplements and/or herbs that are necessary for your functioning during this time. Because the Colorado Cleanse herbal formulas are whole herb formulas, there are rarely issues of interactions, though do speak to your doctor if you are on any medications, especially (but not only) blood thinning medications, as some of the Colorado Cleanse herbs do have a blood thinning effect.
  ................................................................

Who Shouldn’t Do the Cleanse

DON’T DO THE CLEANSE IF:
- You are pregnant
- You are nursing
- You are trying to conceive
- You are on blood-thinning medication
- You have undergone major surgery within the past 8 weeks
- For one reason or another you are unable to perform the laxative therapy at the end of Phase 2 (Day 11 – though the therapy can be moved over one day in either direction, the laxative therapy is an essential part of the Cleanse and cannot be omitted entirely).
- You are severely depleted
- You are super sensitive to herbs and supplements
- You have severe digestive issues (ulcerative colitis/IBS/GERD)

In the case of these last three, it is best to undergo a Rasayana (rebuilding) program before doing a detox. Please schedule a consult with Dr. John Douillard for a customized Rasayana program.
