Nature provides the ideal harvest for each season to keep you strong, healthy, energized and focused. The 3-Season Diet aligns our desires with the foods that nature has provided in season for thousands of years. In the winter, we naturally crave soups, nuts, warm grains, and other high fat and protein foods such as meat and fish. In the spring, we want salads, berries, and leafy greens — a naturally low-fat diet. And in the summer, when the days are long and hot, we require cooling and high-energy foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are a naturally available high carbohydrate diet. New research suggests that our gut microbes are meant to change seasonally by the foods we eat. Seasonal microbes optimize digestion, mood and immunity – the way nature intended!
What happened to the 4th season? You’re probably asking yourself “3 seasons… what happened to the 4th?” or “oooh, that’s a bad typo,” but no, you’re reading that correctly. In nature, there are 3 growing seasons or harvests – not 4. The earth is dormant or resting during one of the seasons. This leaves 3 growing seasons from which we eat. The 3 seasons in Ayurveda are spring, summer and winter. Fall is the dormant season that is considered a transitional component of summer and winter.
A note about regional climates and eating locally: Our Seasonal Grocery Lists accommodate all the regions on the entire planet, and focus most on those foods that have qualities that balance that particular season. If you want to really go for it, you can eat only local and organic foods, but we realize that is not always possible. Your winter season (for example) may also start or end earlier or later than November – February, and even that can vary year by year. Just stay tuned to the climate changes in your area and adjust accordingly, day by day. Soon it will become easy and natural for you as you experiment and listen to your body.
